New-Build Education and Boarding Accommodation
Queen Elizabeth Hall is a purpose-built boarding house developed as part of Shrewsbury School’s programme of investment in its educational and residential estate.
Virtus Consult was appointed to provide Project Management, Employer’s Agent and Quantity Surveying services for the approximately £5.1 million development.
Designed by Adrian James Architects and constructed by Pave Aways, the project provides modern accommodation and communal facilities for boarding and day pupils within the setting of the school’s historic campus.
The architectural design combines traditional materials and Arts and Crafts influences with contemporary accommodation requirements. The building is arranged around an existing cedar tree, creating a sheltered landscaped space, while its facilities include student accommodation and shared social areas.
Sustainability was an important consideration. Queen Elizabeth Hall was developed as the school’s first gas-free boarding house, incorporating air-source heat pump technology.
Virtus’s combined appointment brought together overall project management, contractual administration and cost management within a coordinated professional service.
The project demonstrates our experience of delivering high-quality educational accommodation in sensitive estate settings, balancing new-build construction, architectural quality, sustainability and the requirements of an operational school.
Queen Elizabeth Hall was shortlisted in the Housing Development category of the 2025 Brick Awards, recognising the architectural and material quality of the completed building.
